A bold new way to temporarily increase natural tear production with user-controllable neurostimulation
Have you tried everything for your dry eyes without relief or would like to decrease your dependency on artificial tear usage? Allergan has received FDA approval for their intranasal tear neurostimulator. TrueTear is an innovative device which causes your eyes to produce their own natural tears using tiny pulses of energy which activate a natural response through neurostimulation of the trigeminal nerve endings located in the nasal cavity. This then sends the signal to the lacrimal gland to produce more of your natural tears.
Neurostimulation technology is new to the eye field; however, it has been around for decades in the medical field- Pacemakers, cochlear implants and even a Parkinson’s treatment are examples. Allergan has numerous studies available which demonstrate not only the effectiveness of the device, but also the quality of the tears produced. The stimulated tears possess all the components of natural tears and not just the “watery” component like when you get hit in the nose.
TrueTear is a prescription device consisting of a reusable, rechargeable base and disposable hydrogel tips which are replaced daily. The tips are inserted into the nasal passageway until you feel a gentle tingling sensation (intensity of the stimulation is adjusted by the user). The nasal stimulation should continue for no longer than 3 minutes and can be repeated again after 1 hour, with total treatment time to not exceed 30 minutes in a 24-hour period.
Who is not a good candidate for TrueTear:
If you have a cardiac pacemaker, implanted or wearable defibrillator, or other implanted metallic or electronic device (eg. cochlear implant) in the head or neck, chronic or recurrent nosebleeds, a bleeding disorder (eg. hemophilia), a condition that can lead to increased bleeding, or a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to the hydrogel material.
If you are interested in this new treatment for dry eyes, be sure to inquire if you are a candidate at your next. If you’re not a current patient of our practice, we will be happy to welcome you.
